Low Carb Cheese Sauce

I used to make a homemade cheese sauce all the time for my kids. We would have it over steamed veggies or baked potatoes. They loved it!! I have been craving a good cheese sauce that it trim healthy mama friendly. I made one that is very close to the one I used to make. The teens didn’t say anything, they put it over their steamed broccoli and loved it. I can see serving this over many, many dishes. This low carb cheese sauce is a great replacement for the kind made with bad for your carbs.

Here are a few tips that might be helpful. Don’t use a too small saucepan. The cream will bubble and increase in size as it cooks. It will go back down once it cools down some and is removed from heat. Your salt and pepper amounts are going to be more of a taste and adjust. It is going to depend on the saltiness of the cheese you add. I added about 1 tsp of hot sauce. You can start with a few shakes and taste the sauce. You can start with 1/8 of a tsp of garlic powder if your family is sensitive to garlic. I use a lot of garlic in my recipes and 1/4 tsp wasn’t too much for us. Use my recipe as a guide and adjust to your family’s tastes. This recipe will fit into a low carb, keto, or the trim healthy mama way of eating. This is definitely a thm s recipe. Use this any place you would have used a cheese sauce before changing the way eat.

Low Carb Cheese Sauce


  • 1 C Heavy Cream
  • 2 oz Cream Cheese
  • 3 T Butter
  • 1/4-1/2 t Mustard Powder
  • 1/8-1/4 t Garlic Powder
  • 1 1/4 C Shredded Cheddar Cheese

Seasonings: Salt, pepper, hot sauce to taste


    • In a saucepan add the cream, butter, and garlic and mustard powder. Heat over medium heat.
    • Bring to a boil, whisking occasionally. Boil for 2-3 minutes.
    • Add cream cheese and shredded cheese. Whisk until the cheese has melted.
    • Add your hot sauce. Taste and add salt and pepper and more hot sauce (if desired). Serve warm over food items of choice.
